BASF-YPC Co. Ltd., a joint venture
between BASF and Sinopec, has produced
its first chemical product, methyl
acrylate, at its petrochemical site in
Nanjing, China.
“This was the ambitious goal set by
BASF and Sinopec when they established
their joint venture in 2000,” said
Bernd Blumenberg, president of BASFYPC.
“Our current aim is to start up all
ten plants safely by mid-2005.”
In addition to methyl acrylate, BASFYPC
plans to produce other acrylic
esters and glacial acrylic acid.
BASF is also investing in a new polyisocyanate
plant in the Shanghai
Chemical Industry Park in Caojing near
Shanghai, China. Construction of the
plant, with an annual capacity of approximately
8,000 metric tons, is to begin this
year. The polyisocyanates used in the
manufacture of automotive, industrial
and wood paint, will be sold in the Asian
market
